What are the causes of teeth discoloration?

Teeth discoloration is caused by external and internal factors.  Internal causes stem from  genetic issues and aging processes.  On the other hand, external causes are usually related to the   consumptions of certain food and beverages with strong color agent such as coffee, tea, berries, etc.  The use of chewing tobacco and smoking also result in discolorations on teeth.

When you meet with us, we’ll help you determine the causes of your discoloration and find solutions.  It is very important to receive expert help to reduce the risk of weakening your oral health.

Why does teeth whitening require professional consultation?

Teeth whitening is a process of bleaching your teeth to make them a few shades lighter than normal.  However, any use of whitening kit, tools, paste, strips, and gels introduces certain dangers to your oral health.  Excessive use of these method without professional prescription might increase the risk of enamel loss, or other dental risks.

After receiving approval for teeth whitening, our dentist will take impressions of your teeth set to customize your own mouth guard. Then, you will be instructed on how to use your most suitable bleaching gel with the mouth guard at home.  Ideally bleaching gel is used up to eight hours each session, particularly when you take the rest at night. The whole process takes about two to four weeks.  We encourage patients to come by our office for regular check-ups.

During the treatment, you will be advised to consume the least possible of strong colored food and beverages and, if necessary, to change smoking habits.  The results last longer if you keep practicing the new habits.

Another available option for quick results is laser whitening.  In this procedure, the bleaching product is layered on your teeth and activated by laser.  This method takes only an hour.

How long does teeth whitening last?

The result varies, but typically it lasts from one to three years.  However, touch up appointments can significantly prolong a bright white smile.  Additionally, one’s oral hygiene and diet affect the longevity of the results.
